Timeline of AOEC Projects

Over the last 4 decades, AOEC has launched many projects, some of which are ongoing and others time limited.  Below is a timeline that gives you a flavor of the breadth of projects, activities, and initiatives. 

1980s:

AOEC incorporates in 1987 and begins forming nationwide network of OEHS clinics

Commences monthly newsletters about activities on the Hill and in the OEHS field.

1990s:

Develops OEHS curriculum materials for clinicians, OEM residents and students.

Creates OEHS exposure codes and asthmagen database.

Supports OEM Residencies to match doctors with residency programs.

Provides technical reviews of the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) Toxicological Profiles. 

Initiates network of Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Units.

Established the Great Lakes Scholars Program to increase student and clinician education in environmental issues of the Great Lakes Basin. The program included collaboration with Canada through the International Joint Commission.  

2000s:

Provides occupational health support to Deepwater Horizon Disaster response.

Joins with Mt. Sinai Selikoff Centers for Occupational Health’s World Trade Center (WTC) surveillance program for WTC response workers. 

Establishes the Occupational Health Internship Program (OHIP) to increase the pipeline for OEHS professionals.

Produces clinical guidance documents on screening and management for workers exposed to asbestos and lead exposure in adults.

2010s:

Began moderating the national OEHS listserv (OEM-List), which was started in 1994 by Dr. Gary Greenberg.

Provided expertise to review medical records for the Department of Justice and NIOSH WTC Victims Compensation Fund.

Coordinated treatment for WTC responders through grants from the Rockefeller Foundation and the American Red Cross.

2020s:

20-year Anniversary of the Occupational Health Internship Program (OHIP) – OESH Pipeline.

Provides technical support and training on OEHS topics to the International Chemical Workers Union Council (ICWUC).
